Pro Rail Services Ltd. is a Railway civil engineering contractor who execute maintenance contracts on Network Rail infrastructure. This project took place on the South East Route of the network.

The track drainage system in the area had a history of blockages, which lead to numerous track flooding events induced by high vegetation to the drainage ditches.

Network Rail was keen for this to be addressed as part of its planned maintenance programme. Pro Rail Services Ltd. was commissioned to brushcut a 1000m section of CESS 3m wide to clear the drainage ditch to allow water to flow.

The project was tendered five weeks before possession. Pro Rail Services Ltd. was awarded the contract with three weeks to plan the works and mobilise its teams.

The Pro Rail Services Ltd. planning team quickly put together a project plan that would ensure the works could be completed safely and effectively.

  • The teams consisted of one site manager, one engineer and 12 skilled de-vegetation operatives working across the site.
  • Green Mech Chippers, with trained operators, were also brought in to assist the delivery of this project

Crossrail West Outers – track drainage works

Track drainage replacement project for Crossrail (on behalf of Balfour Beatty Rail / Lanes Group PLC)

We worked for Lanes Group Rail Division to complete a project replacing track drainage on the western section of Crossrail. The £14.8 billion Crossrail programme involves the construction of a new 73-mile east-west route from Maidenhead in Berkshire, through central London to Shenfield in Essex.

We were commissioned to replace track drainage along a section of line being lowered to allow new overhead power lines to run under a bridge. These overhead power lines are being installed as part of the Great Western electrification programme.

The work involved removal of 200 metres of track drainage and replacing it with new pipework as part of work to upgrade lines incorporated in the Crossrail programme.

The Rail team completed the track drainage renewal near Slough in Berkshire, over two consecutive weekends.

The track drainage renewal project was completed in two stages. During a track possession on the first weekend, the Rail team removed the previous drainage and system.

Then, the following weekend, the new track drainage was installed, along with new catch pits.

On both weekends, a total of 16 track drainage skilled operatives, plus supervision and site engineers worked on the project, in four 12-hour shifts throughout Saturday and Sunday.

The successful completion of this project, on behalf of Lanes Group PLC, demonstrates Pro Rail’s competency in carrying out track drainage renewal on Network Rail assets.

All site works were completed to programmes budget, quality and environmental targets with zero accidents on site.
